Thanks Cathy - that's great insight. Too often people look for gluten-free/sugar-free/whatever-free "alternatives." But they're still just products. If it comes in a box, it's probably an indulgence, not health food. So glad you're on the right track!

Great interview. I wish everyone was told right away that gluten free doesn't mean healthy. When I first went gluten free eight years ago, I started off eating really well because at the time there wasn't much on the market that was gluten free. My health improved. However, as the gluten free products became available, I indulged and my health suffered. Finding Paleo has made living gluten free so much easier. I don't try to find gluten free alternatives any longer. Instead, I focus on delicious food that comes as it was meant to be.

Hi Abel,

I don't think I was clear about who would be coaching whom. I'm suggesting that an experienced paleo mom mentor an inexperienced one, with only one hour total of professional coaching for each pair of moms per week in a conference call. That reduces the time commitment on your part, keeping you more available for paid consulting.

You can contact me privately about getting some free skilled labor for the website end of this idea.

Cheers,
jake3_14

Hi Jeffrey,
You bet! Ha, no lemon juice for a week nonsense on this website. You are right on with detox and weight lifting. Too many folks try to "fight" against their bodies; our bodies are biochemical marvels and we need to work WITH them to increase our health. It's all about giving your body the right fuel and stimuli to make it happy and healthy. Sounds like you already know that... :)

Hi there, thanks for the question. Personally, I'm a huge fan of seltzer water. No calories, hydration, bubbles... it doesn't get better than that. Drinking gallons of it a day probably isn't advisable for various reasons, but you have my stamp of approval.

Jack's approach - low-carb and the LeptinRx has worked for many, many folks, and clearly low-carb is an effective weight loss strategy. As far as cold thermogenesis goes, my philosophy is: try it! The worst case scenario is that you'll shiver a bit. But take a look at his testimonials for the best case scenario - pretty amazing stuff. Give it a whirl and let me know how it goes!

Abel,

Thank you for your enlightened response! If you would have said to drink lemon juice for a week I would have been very disappointed!

That said, nothing is more biochemically capable of detoxing you than your own liver. Eat right to allow the proper pathways to function and presto...your cleansed! I look at it this way....lifting weights doesn't make you stronger, it provides the stimulus for your own body to adapt to and make you stronger. It's your body, not the weights that produces the strength gain. Same with detox, give your body the proper stimulus (healthy real foods), and your body will cleanse itself.

Hi Jack,
Right on! Cleansing is a "sexy" issue these days... I don't subscribe to the belief that you need expensive pills or juices in order to "cleanse." If you're eating clean foods (and especially fibrous veggies and fruits), your body will naturally cleanse itself over time, so extreme cleanses are likely not necessary. However, some people swear by them so I'd say give a simple smoothie/juice fast a shot ("Clean" is a decent book to get started on cleansing). Ketogenic fasts (with heavy cream/MCT oil) can also be beneficial. I'm writing a new book on fasting, so stay tuned! And give a shout if you have any more questions.

Thanks, new subscriber here and new big fan. I am making my way through your podcasts. Do you have any suggestions for a proper "cleanse" aside from just cutting out processed foods and sugars... specifically like colon clinics/cleanses?

Abel,

You frequently ask how you can take over the top podcast spot from Jillian Michaels. Here's my idea. Women, and especially moms, are the primary health guardians in the home, unless Dad's an MD. Women already love your program (yeah, your voice is sexy). So, create a "busy mom" contest for 4 of your motherly listeners: Take another mom who's interested in your paleo success but hasn't started on the path under your wing for 90 days, and report the results every three weeks on the show for 15 minutes per pair of moms. Ask other paleo luminaries who are also moms to offer support once a week by phone to help the newbie and her mentor.

If this succeeds, repeat the contest.

Normally, there'd be a grand prize, but paleo-quality health and vitality ought to be prize enough. If not, how about a web page devoted to the participants that has a permanent home on your site. You could also hold a lottery among the participants for an all-expense-paid trip to the next Paleo FX gathering as an incentive.

Thanks Martin! It's a shame more MD's aren't picking up on how common of an issue gluten intolerance is - but it seems like it's changing for the better. Cheers!

Shannon's story is so typical. From the long time it took to diagnose celiac, to the mistake of avoiding fat, she's basically telling the story of most people who end up eating low carb. Good interview.

[...] Celiac - Gluten Intolerance Celiac disease is a chronic genetic disorder also known as gluten...ergic reaction to ingesting gluten. Gluten is a group of proteins present in wheat, barley, rye, and oats. The lining of the intestines consists of areas described as villi which assist in the absorbtion of nutrients. When individuals with celiac disease consume foods that contain gluten, their body’s defence mechanism responds by harming the villi. Because of the wide range of symptoms present in celiac disease, it can be challenging to diagnose, as the symptoms can vary from person to person. But some of the symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal pains, gas, indigestion, constipation, depression, fatigue. Celiac Disease has no cure, but in most individuals a gluten free diet will bring about an improvement of the symptoms within a few weeks, and sooner in many cases. [...]

Quick question: what about carbonated water/seltzer? No calories, just added CO2. Personally, I'm a seltzer fiend so I'd like to know what you think.

A few years ago a dropped 125lbs to go from 320 to 195 living a paleo-esque lifestyle. I maintained that for a few years when life (jobs, relationship, stress, etc) got to me and now I'm 345. At some point I abandoned my low carb principles and apparently went all out for a long period of time (I have stories upon stories of buying a cake and eating it within 10 minutes - and that's not the worst of it!).

Frankly, I'm just getting back in the game but I'm willing to do what it takes. I'm actually following Jack Kruse's protocol for obese people (less than 25g of carbs/day) because, having read through his stuff, I recall that was my approach when I lost my original 120lbs (in less than 1 year and largely without exercise). I guess I just needed to see it in writing as well as from someone I can relate in the sense that he also was also in my position years ago and did it. I can't say I'll be doing the CT stuff he does but with he, Ray Cronise, and Tim Ferriss talking about this heavily the last few years, I might just consider it (though I can't submerge myself in the bathtub because it's too small and I'm too fat, lol).

So I guess I'd boil it down to: 1) what is your take on seltzer; and 2) what is your take on Kruse's approach?

Hi Kathy, if you're just getting started, try sprinting once a week. A great exercise for beginners is sprints on a stationary bike (as hard as you can for ~20 seconds, then rest for ~10 for 10 repetitions). If you prefer to run, try sprinting at 60% or 70% of your max speed at first. It's more important to reduce risk of injury and you can always ratchet it up later!

Hi Brian, Glad you're digging the podcast. My approach to exercise is this - do something that you love, but don't overdo it. Short and intense workouts are excellent, especially if you are in decent health and give yourself ample time off to rest and recover. If you like Insanity, keep doing it. If you don't, find something you love!

Loving the podcast. Got into the pale diet after my brother-in-law used it to recover from losing a lung to cancer. I have been doing the Beachbody Insanity workouts which are short and very intense. Was wondering what your thoughts are on the Insanity workouts. Please advise.
