Whee! We’re starting a weekly “Food for Thought” post featuring articles from around the interwebs that might raise some eyebrows. And because we’re all foodies here, you also get 3 recipes from kickass real-food bloggers. Gonna be fun.
Let’s see what’s in store for this week…
1. Why Is Skipping Breakfast So Bad For Our Heart Health? (link)
It’s no secret that I skip breakfast in favor of hand-roasted Fatty Coffee. While that works for me, debate on the “necessity of breakfast” continues in this article from Forbes. I found this quote a bit questionable…
Men who skipped breakfast were 27% more likely to experience heart attack or to die as the result of coronary heart disease. The men who skipped breakfast were more likely to be single, smokers, employed full-time, to drink more alcohol, were younger, and were less likely to be physically active than people who ate breakfast.
So is THE ACT of skipping breakfast what screws your heart or the fact that the *type* of person who regularly misses breakfast happens to be a lazy boozer who smokes… ?
That’s some real science, folks!
Personally, I doubt refusing to stuff my gullet with a heaping bowl of Lucky Charms every morning will give me a heart attack.
Remember to be your own experiment. It’s more fun than reading Forbes.
2. Fats and Cholesterol: Out with the Bad; In with the Good from Harvard School of Public Health (link)
While this article is far from perfect, it is awfully nice to see a big name like HSPH calling for an end to the low-fat myth. Unfortunately, they still have some screws loose when it comes to which fats they consider “healthy”:
Limit your intake of saturated fats by cutting back on red meat and full-fat dairy foods. Try replacing red meat with beans, nuts, poultry, and fish whenever possible, and switching from whole milk and other full-fat dairy foods to lower fat versions…
“Switch to lower fat versions”? Oh well…. We’re getting there.
3.”Heal Low Stomach Acid Naturally” by Empowered Sustenance (link)
A number of listeners and readers have cited troubles with heartburn and are looking to live without proton-pump inhibitors like Prilosec and the like. This is a neat little post about how to do just that.
